In times of crisis, it’s always good to turn to the scientists.
It’s a truth we’re reminded of during the current coronavirus pandemic, but it’s one that Jeff Goldblum’s Jurassic Park character, Dr. Ian Malcolm, has always known. Talking to PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing from London, where he’s currently filming Jurassic World: Dominion, Goldblum reflected on how ahead of his time Dr. Malcolm was.
“As it happens, there are things that my character talks about, has always talked about,” he said. “The fragility of our species and the global cooperation that’s needed, and the foundation in science that’s needed, and the ethical use of science that’s needed to unite us in trust and connectiveness as a family. And to reach our potential and do right by ourselves and this glorious planet. All of those things are now more relevant than ever.”
Goldblum hinted that same ethos will be at play in Dominion, the sixth film in the Jurassic franchise. “Already in this plot, there are thing we’re finding are already apropos,” he said, having only been through one day of filming at the time of the interview.
Jurassic World: Dominion is one of the first projects to return to production following COVID-19 shutdowns, and Goldblum is excited to return to the world. “It was a very thrilling day on set,” he said. “It was me and Laura [Dern] and Sam [O’Neill] in a jeep. I can’t tell you any more about it, but it was very thrilling.”
The franchise has been a massive box office success over the years, but for Goldblum, much of the rewarding legacy comes from having worked with director Steven Spielberg on the original film. “I’m always a little more delighted by and focused on the creative delight and deliciousness of any one thing,” he said. “In this case, it was fantastic. Working with Steven Spielberg was great. I did that and another one after that [. He’s just so enthusiastic and brilliant and creative. You just learn a lot from him.”
